Step 1) Relax – The biggest mistake a person with a back injury can make is to panic and create more damage to the lower back.
Step 2) Get Help – You are going to need some assistance if you are unable to move freely and will need help taking care of yourself. Let someone know and ask them to be on stand by incase you need them.
Step 3) Start anti-inflammatory Medications – If you are not allergic to and are able to take Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs such as Naproxin or Ibprophen, begin taking them as directed. These medications can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain in a couple of days.
Step 4) Apply a Cold Pack – If you don’t have a cold pack you can use a bag of frozen vegetables. Place a thin hand towel on your lower back and then apply the cold pack. Allow the cold pack to remain for no longer than 20 minutes and then take it off. It is important that your muscles and skin return to normal temperatures for the process to relax the tension in your back.
Step 5) Contact Your Doctor – If you are use to back pain and know how to treat yourself then do what you usually do to get relief. On the other hand, if this is your first back pain experience, it is important to see your doctor and get their opinion on what caused your condition and the possible solutions for recovery.
Step 6) Bed Rest – Relaxing and giving your back time to heal is extremely important in the initial stages of a sciatic nerve injury. You are going to need some time for your back muscles to relax. Doing your normal activities may not be possible and if attempted may cause more damage and delay in your healing. Try to find comfortable positions that you can rest in without hurting. Have a variety of pillows to place between your legs and to prop your head as you rest.
Step 7) Move – Just like with the ice therapy, it is important to switch from bed rest to light stretching and controlled movements of the affected area. Take a short walk, do some stretching, sit for a while, and then return to the bed rest.
Step 8) Massage – Hopefully you have someone who is helping you and can do some physical therapy to the affected area. Remember step one? Relax as they rub and massage your back. Provide instructions on the location and the intensity they should used as they work on your back. Deep tissue massage using the knuckles or elbow on the lower back and in the glutes can release the tension of the muscles affecting the sciatic nerve. If you don’t have someone to help you with a massage, you can use a tennis ball instead. Place the ball under your lower back and gently apply pressure. When you find the trigger point then slowly rock back and forth until you feel the tension release.
Step 9) Be Patient – Treated properly sciatica can be reversed and healed in as early as 7 days, but depending on the type of injury, the treatment method used, and the implementation of the treatment method, recovery can take longer and be recurring if the root causes of the injury is not properly addressed.
Step 10) Prevention – Once you are on your way to recovery, it is important to take steps that will prevent this from ever happening again. Our backs, our spine, and our sciatic nerve is an extremely complex system that provides us the ability to complete necessary daily activities that enhance our lives. We must take care of ourselves from the core out.
There are a wide range of options for treating sciatica back pain. In our opinion bed rest and ibuprofen are not enough to give sufficient relief, and cortisone injections or surgery is too extreme.
